Vaccine Information & Our Story

I've recently started looking at vaccines and which ones I should give to my son. Some he has received, some he hasn't. It's all a personal choice - no judgement of the parent who does or does not vaccinate here! Every parent will make the decision that feels right for them.

In November 2011 something hit me about the amount of vaccines that babies get. I called my clinic and asked them to send me a copy of his vaccination records. At that point I decided to stop vaccinations until I had more time to study things. It wasn't until April 2012 that I really started reading about vaccinations (after talking with several people between that time and April...my doctor [who was my doctor first, my doctor during pregnancy, she delivered my son, and is now his doctor], my Chiropractor, other mom's, my instructor at school, former nurses, the list goes on). I decided to go back and look through the journal that I keep for Gabriel...see what things looked like that I had written down concerning his health and vaccinations.

Here is our story:
We went to Gabriel's first doctors appointment on November 1, 2010 and he received his 2 month old vaccinations:
- Pneumococcal 13-valent vaccine
- Hepatitis B vaccine
- Diptheria/Haemophilus/Pertusssis/Tetanus/Polio Vaccine (the "pentacel")
= 7 vaccines in one day

This is what the journal entry that I have says: "You had your 2 month check up on Monday and you had 3 shots. You cried and cried, which made me cry and then I nursed you to make you feel better; you did. For a few hours. We went to see your cousin and you were fine all the way there and almost all the way back home and then BAM! It all hit you like a ton of bricks. You, out of nowhere, started screaming and crying like I had never heard. I pulled over on the side of the highway and we both tried to calm you down, but nothing was helping. Daddy ran down the highway to ShopKo and got you some tylenol. All you did was sob and sob and sob. It was so sad! The tylenol helped you calm down a little and we got you home, but you whimpered in your sleep all night long. You were fine the next morning but then you spiked a fever (over 100.4) - the tylenol brought it down a little bit. The following day you were really crabby and really tired."

My Jan. 4, 2011 entry says that he went in for his 4 month vaccinations and he had the same reaction a few hours after we got home from the doctors appointment. I made a note here that says that both appointments took place at 3pm and by 7pm (almost to the minute) he was a disaster.
His 4 month old vaccinations were:
- Pneumococcal 13-valent vaccine
- Diptheria/Haemophilus/Pertusssis/Tetanus/Polio Vaccine (the "pentacel")
= 6 vaccinations in one day
= Total of 14 vaccinations so far in 4 months (he had the Hep B at birth as well)

Also, I was reading over some information and those who have had childrent with reactions, doctors, researchers, etc. don't just look for reactions that happen within a day, they look at even over a period of weeks or months. This is what I have written in my journal about what happened after Gabe's 6 months vaccinations:
He received:
- Pneumococcal 13-valent vaccine
- Diptheria/Haemophilus/Pertusssis/Tetanus/Polio Vaccine (the "pentacel")

- Hepatitis B vaccine
= 7 vaccines in one day
= 21 vaccinations so far in 6 months

- 2 days after the vaccinations he woke up really upset in the night (not typical of him at all, he's always been a really good, calm sleeper).
-2 weeks after that he had to be taken to the ER for a high fever and crying a lot. They suspected something was wrong with his throat, but apparently found nothing...We went home with no answers.

- 10 days after that visit we were back in the ER in the middle of the night for a 106 fever that was rising and I rushed him in. He had a throat infection that had been festering for weeks.
- 1 day after that visit, during the night, he was SO hot that he actually woke me up from the heat (co-sleeping here). He was really upset and really tired...the only thing I could think to do was put him in a lukewarm bath. He screamed and cried and sat there saying "momma, momma..."
- 3 days after that night he puked all over me after a car ride...he's not a puker...never was before that and has only puked one other time since.

His 12 month old vaccinations were given on Sept. 21, 2011.
He received:
- Pneumococcal 13-valent vaccine
- Hepatitis A (pediatric vaccine)
= 2 vaccines today
= 23 vaccines so far

Nothing happened immediately, but over the next few months we had a whole slew of things go wrong. From blood in the urine, blue spells, skin that felt like sand paper, and a food allergy that seemingly came out of nowhere...
- 6 weeks later he developed blood in his urine (NOT in his poop, but straight from the urine). I took him to the ER with the diaper in hand and they had no idea what it was. I had no answers. He had 3 more episodes of this happening over the following weeks.
- 2 weeks after that visit he spiked a 102 degree fever that wouldn't budge.
The following evening I had to take him to the ER. His fever was 104.4 (and that was just with the thermometer touching the back of his neck...he wouldn't let me put it anywhere else). He was totally lethargic...he had no interest in moving. We discovered a double ear infection that night.
- About a week after that he started to have these weird purple spells. His hands, feet, legs, lips, and around his mouth would turn purple (mostly in the morning).
- On December 6th I came to a conclusion that he had a dairy allergy. I future appointment with a pediatrician specialist would confirm this.

I would like to make a final note here and say that after every vaccination appointment we would end up with reactions. After the reactions had passed we had our healthy child again, but there was always a reaction. After his last vaccinations in September we have had to deal with the long term consequences of his skin and allergy issues. I can only hope they will go away someday.
