Fees & Other FAQ's

How much does a Doula charge?
Its really up to the Doula. Fees can range anywhere from $300 - $1,000. Doula's in training may charge nothing or a lower fee.

What do services include?
Usually the Doula will meet with you one or more times prior to the birth to talk about your birth plans. If you haven't already come up with a birth plan, she may help you set one up. Doulas are normally available by phone and/or email to talk about anything you may want to discuss or are concerned about. A Doula will be present throughout the entire birth, as well as a few hours postpartum.

What do Doulas NOT do?
Doulas do not perform medical checks and they do not deliver the baby. Their role is to only support and advocate, if need be, on your behalf.

How do I find a Doula?
  • Contact your nearest Midwifery practice
  • Call DONA (Doulas of North America) at (206) 324-5440 OR visit http://www.dona.org
  • Call CAPPA (Childbirth and Postpartum Association) at 1-888-548-3672 OR visit http://www.cappa.net/

What questions should I ask a Doula?
First and foremost, you'll want to feel comfortable with your Doula. She wont feel bad if you don't choose her, we just want you to feel a connection with us - if you don't, you don't!
  • Ask for a list of references
  • Ask about whether or not she offers labor support services only, postpartum services only, or both
  • Ask her about the type of training she's had (is she DONA certified?)
  • Ask her how many births she's attended
  • Ask her about the role she would see herself playing in the birth
  • Ask her about her fees
  • Ask her if you're able to call her with questions and concerns before and after the birth
  • Ask her if she has a backup Doula (this Doula would be used if she is busy with another birth when you go into labor)
